The HD 800S is Sennheiser's reference flagship — a 56mm ring transducer built for a soundstage that regular dynamic drivers can't match, tuned to correct the treble emphasis of the original HD 800. Handled in India by Headgear Audio.
A driver shaped like a ring, not a dome.
Instead of a conventional dome driver, the HD 800S uses a 56mm ring radiator — the diaphragm is annular, with the voice coil at its edge instead of the centre — angled inside an unusually large earcup. That geometry is what gives the HD 800S its scale: instruments and voices resolve with more space between them than almost anything else in this class.
The 'S' revision added an internal absorber to tame the treble emphasis that the original HD 800 was known for, without giving up any of that stage width. It's a 300 Ω load — plan for a serious desktop amp, not a phone dongle.

Is this an upgrade from the HD 650?+

Yes — the stock cable terminates in balanced 4.4mm with a 6.3mm single-ended adaptor, matching the connector the HD 800S ships with from Sennheiser.
